How much ice time is included in the price of tuition?

Most Coyotes teams  generally play a 22 game regular season schedule, plus playoffs in the South Shore Conference.  We may also have teams that will be playing in the Bay State  Hockey Mite league.  In addition, Coyotes teams practice twice per week at Charles Moore Arena (some exceptions arise with holidays, rink events, etc.). We try to add additional skills sessions and other ice events whenever possible. Each full season team participates in one off-site tournament.  In addition, those full season teams that qualify play in the state tournament  which usually occurs the first couple weeks of March.

How long is the season?

Coyotes practices start around Labor Day, and games begin in late September. The season usually ends in late March.

How much travel is involved?

This will very from team to team depending on what league they are in.  This season, away games have been played at rinks in Dennis, Barnstable, Bourne, Plymouth, Brockton, Braintree, and Quincy, however teams participating in the league vary from year-to-year.  Once per year, we try to participate in one tournament outside of our league geography – the past few years we have traveled to Lake Placid and Jay Peak.
Tournaments almost always start on Friday mornings, so your child may have to miss school for these.

I’ve heard that travel hockey means early hours at the rink… What kind of hours can I expect for games and practices?

The Coyotes are fortunate when it comes to ice times. Practices are held on weekdays, after school or in the early evening (typically starting no earlier than 5pm and ending no later than 9pm depending on the age of the skaters). Game times vary, but they are always held on Saturdays and/or Sundays, usually in the morning. Our teams occasionally have 7:30am games, but typically games are later in the morning.

Tryout / Evaluation procedures:

  • There is a non refundable fee charged at the time of registration.  The fee is $75.00 for mites-peewees and $75.00 for Bantam and 16U/18U.

  • Tryouts consist of 2 nights of skating.  The first night is centered around basic skills in line drills and small area games.  The second night is half and full ice scrimmages beginning with smaller groups each on their own 1/2 sheet followed by full ice 5 v5 games.

  • We use a combination of independent evaluators consisting of coaches from outside our organization and our own in house coaches.  We use a combination because we feel there are certain traits that in house coaches know that may or may not reveal themselves at a 2 day tryout.  While our in house coach may or may not have coached a player, they usually know them all to a certain extent.

  • Upon check in players are given a numbered pinnie and are evaluated based on the number only.

  • Players are evaluated and scored using specific criteria and are given an aggregate score.  Players are then ranked according to this score and teams are formed.

    • The number of teams for each division is based upon how many skaters there are in that age group.

    • Sometimes (but not always) the upper level teams are purposefully left small to accommodate “bubble” players that may enhance their skills over the summer in preparation for the upcoming season.

    • If a player falls into this “bubble” category, they will be placed on the lower team.  These players are re-evaluated in the first week of the season by our coaches and placed accordingly.

    • If siblings are the same age group, you may request to have them play on the same team; they will, however, be placed based on the lower of the scores.

It is our responsibility and mission to make teams that can compete at all levels and we try very hard to make this happen.  All decisions are made with the utmost due diligence and care.
